Khyké (pronounced kh-ee-kay) , a Susu word from Guinea, West Africa meaning “radiant” or “moon” lives up to its name in every sense. Thanks to Sammy and Ben, this workshop is a cultural immersion wrapped in colour, storytelling, and creative joy.
From the moment you arrive, there is a warmth that feels intentional and deeply rooted. Over two unhurried hours, you are gently guided into the world of West African artistry, with traditional music and song, history and identity woven together. The hand-dyed Lepi fabric, symbolic of graduating to adulthood, and the bold wax prints of Ankara fabrics are breathtaking, each pattern carrying a rhythm and presence of its own. Choosing your colours, shapes, and charms for your earrings becomes an act of self-expression illuminated by tradition.
There is something profoundly grounding about working with Guinean fabrics while hearing the stories that accompany them. The fascinating artistry behind the prints, their meanings, their origins, the cultural pride embedded within them adds depth to every creative decision. It transforms the experience from simply “making earrings” into participating in a living narrative.
Sipping iced hibiscus tea alongside light refreshments adds a sensory richness to the afternoon. The sweet-tart notes of the tea mirror the vibrancy of the fabrics – refreshing, bold, and enchanting.
By the end, you leave with radiantly colourful Khyké earrings (beautifully boxed and ready to wear or gift) and a sense of connection to West African heritage and creativity.
This workshop is an immersive, creative adventure with guided help as needed but each participant is encouraged to make it their own individual journey.
Khyke’s next workshop is Sunday 1 March and is selling out fast so commit yourself to some creative adventure and cultural fun! You won’t regret it!!
