Seasoned performer and vocalist Lindsay Prodea is no stranger to standing before an audience, and his beautiful voice and boundless charm embrace the audience as he tells a story close to his heart. Using song and storytelling, Lindsay shares stories of the history of the queer community through the 20th century as well as tales of his own journey of self-discovery.
Supported by an outstanding band, the show features song excerpts interwoven with snippets of story. The audience is treated to queer anthems from artists such as Queen, Cole Porter, Doris Day, Dusty Springfield, Diana Ross, Elton John, Pat Benatar, Kate Bush, Madonna, and, of course, Judy Garland, to name only a few. The range of the setlist is astounding considering the 75 minute timeframe, and while Lindsay’s voice definitely suits the musical theatre, classic jazz and disco numbers more than the rock and pop, he delivers every number with a passion and energy that had the back rows of the audience on their feet dancing.
Overall, the script was tight, song excerpts moving seamlessly into narrative and back again, though the last 15 minutes or so does stagnate in spots and could use a little tightening. However, the megamix of incredible queer party songs (ABBA, Chappell Roan, Gloria Gaynor, more Queen, more Elton!) was worth waiting for, leaving us with a joyful dance party celebrating the queer identity.
Supporting Lindsay in this emotive and celebratory show is an exceptional band led by Peter Johns (music director, keys, arrangements) and featuring Mykaela McQueen (guitars), Jack Barton (drums) and John Wilsdon (bass). A few sound gremlins notwithstanding, they were a tight unit that backed Lindsay with subtlety and stunning musicality.
There is only one more performance of this beautiful show, which manages to be both camp and heartfelt, so make sure you take the time to head to Prospect to see this show.
