Shuhada
In 1992, Shuhada (Sinéad O’Connor) took her mother’s portrait of the Pope to Saturday Night Live - and ripped it to pieces - shattering her pop-star career in one swift sweep, whilst igniting her legacy as a fearless social activist.
At age 19, MT (Marie Thérèse) set off across Ireland on her green steed, cycling through the rocky landscapes of abandoned faith, ancestral hunger, and intergenerational rage - half expecting to bump into Sinéad amongst her many long-lost cousins.
In this 60-minute musical deep dive, MT sings her way home — unearthing lost languages, reminiscing upon her travels, revisiting Sinéad’s genre-defying journey - from Irish trad, to pop, to punk, to rap, to reggae ... to imagine - what might Shuhada Sadaqat have sung next?
Enter via Victoria Street, via Victoria Lane. Free 2hr street parking. Bar open from 5pm serving drinks & snacks with outdoor / indoor lounge seating. The Little Reid Theatre is 3rd venue Ground Floor. Small seated theatre space, door sales unlikely.
Presented by: MT
MT (Marie Thérèse) is a multi-instrumental, Adelaide Fringe award-winning musician, living and working on Kuarna Yerta.
Born to a social activist opera junky and a concert pianist, she decided early on to do whatever it takes to stop Gilbert & Sullivan permeating her brain, trying very hard to not - become a musician.
However, fate would have it that pianos continued to fall in front of her - she’s lucky to be alive!
Having escaped to remote regions to steep in musical traditions of West Africa, West Ireland and the West Wing of the jazz school, MT continues to be obsessed with the nuts and bolts of music, writing in blues, soul, folk and world music genres.
Through piano, percussion, guitars, vocals and myriad found objects, MT delivers a raw sound that is compelling and authentic.
