I'm a Refugee...Get Me Out of Here!
In 1998 Samuel Gebreselassie was just a child when his Ethiopian family escaped a war-torn Sudanese refugee camp, finding himself all the way in New Zealand thanks to the UN’s refugee program.
Today, he’s one of Australia’s rising comedy stars, a multi-award winning comedian & producer making his way across the ditch to share his hilariously unique origin story and outsider perspective on the world.
Hand-picked by the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and featured on ABC Radio, catch Sam before he gets out of here!
★★★★ “Hilarious” Theatre Thoughts.

“...had me laughing out loud.” Lilithia Reviews.
Presented by: Samuel Gebreselassie
Hailing from Ethiopia via New Zealand, Samuel Gebreselassie is Australia’s freshest comedy voice. He brings a critical and fresh view to Australia’s comedy scene. He’s a bold artist behind the mic, and not afraid to tackle ‘uncomfortable’ topics whilst provoking laughs at the same time.
Samuel was born in Sudan to Ethiopian parents but spent the majority of his life in New Zealand and now he lives in Australia. This unorthodox upbringing shaped a perceptive of the world that’s unique and hilarious.
In 2023, Samuel was selected to take part in Comedy Zone; a showcase of the 5 best up-and-coming comedians in Australia by the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. In 2017, and again in 2019, Samuel won the coveted Comedy out West Open Mic Competition. Heard on ABC Radio Melbourne.
