She’s a woman dressed as a man dressed as a woman but she’s far from wholesome Julie Andrews and this is not Victor/Victoria. This is Australia’s Mistress of Mischief and Kween of Kabaret, the inimitable Trash Tash York.
After 10 years in the limelight building her career with big red hair, York celebrates the occasion with an ode to redheaded legends, including fake ones like herself. Adele, Annie Lennox, Bette Midler, David Bowie and more make the cut, along with York’s own original songs and her unabashed humour that always brings the house down.
There’s also her signature red wine.
York is a circuit highlight year after year and unless you’re a prude, it’s impossible not to be drawn into her sassy humour, extraordinary singing voice, glamorous costumes and biting observations. She will make you see red over the injustices of the world but not at the expense of the momentum or comedy. Tash York works the room with the exact amount of pace, disgrace and lace. She is fabulousness personified.
If you know her schtick, it’s not new York new York, but the show is new, the jokes are fresh, and she’s joined on stage by the exquisitely fine Peppy Smears on keyboard, vocals and talk back. Smears could consume an entire review himself with his divine vocals, comic timing and musical talent but like a true professional, he’s there to support the blinding star of the show and he does so by serving just the right amount of attitude.
See red, before the lights go dark.
