A comic feast of cross-cultural conflicts and confusions, Boats and Bogans could leave you feeling sated or reaching for a bucket. Five “no-name” stand-ups for half the price of an internationally renowned one might sound like a bargain but buyer beware – this is a car-crash at times. There’s something among the smorgasbord of diversity for all tastes, and especially during the “Bogan” sets for those with no taste. If you have grandparents or ever been to the Semaphore Odeon Star cinema you might want to stick your fingers in your ears – and nowhere else – during Lukey Baker’s set. Stand outs among the “Boats” (recent migrants) were MC, Aditya Gautam, who cogently argues all races are racist, and former Kenyan marathon runner, turned Australian permanent visa aspirant, Black Paul, who powered on when a scudding rain shower send his audience scurrying. It’s raw – like a festering open wound – but among the Rhino Room regulars you might just catch Australia’s next great comic act.
