Comedians Rebel Star and Melody Rachel appear in Lesbian Sex Diaries, a chaotic and joyful ode to all things lesbian told through raw stories, unfiltered confessions, and personal diary entries taken from the real life experiences of queer women (names changed to protect the innocent!) It is an experimental piece of theatre that contrasts the experiences of Melody Rachel who came out at 15 years old as gold star lesbian and Rebel Star who discovered she was the only lesbian in her marriage.
Rebel Star and Melody Rachel are a bit of a lesbian odd couple, the hilarious hot mess and the contained comedian, which is a dynamic that works well for them. The humour of show was a bit c*unty, vulgar and plays to the stereotypes of lesbians a little too much. Lesbian Sex Diaries as a work in development by emerging artists, there is definite potential for this show to go further in other interesting directions looking at lesbian lived experiences.
The show is loud and colourful with fast paced comedic sketches such as the hilarious musical tribute to sleeping with your mother and a love song to the dental dam. These flashes of malarkey are punctuated by moments of deep psychological self reflection on her queer ancestry by Rebel Star; juxtaposed by deep theological exegesis of being queer & Christian by Melody Rachel. The underlying message of the show is about embracing sex positivity as queer women, it’s also about not settling for more or less than you want in a relationship.
