Clocking in with two generous 75-minute sets, this show at the Arkaba’s iconic Top of the Ark certainly gives you your money’s worth. The powerhouse eight-piece band delivers a high-energy journey through the 60s and 70s, paying tribute to the pioneering women who defined the era. I Am Woman is the 1971 album by Helen Reddy who is featured along with other greats from the soulful anthems of Aretha Franklin, Cher and Tina Turner to the rock edges of Suzi Quatro and Fleetwood Mac, the setlist is a nostalgic masterclass.

Lead singer Mel Jubb’s portrayal of Janis Joplin is a clear standout, unsurprising, given her pedigree with Full Tilt Janis. Backed by a tight horn section (featuring an 80-year-old saxophonist who hasn’t lost a beat), the two vocalists offer distinct but complementary styles that capture the subtle nuances of every artist they cover.

The dancefloor was packed from the first few songs and stayed that way all night, in response to Mel’s instructions to “shake what your mama gave you”.

A few more nostalgic backdrops would have been the icing on the cake, but if you love powerful women in rock, you’ll love this show.

If you missed the two Fringe shows, you can catch this band playing regularly around town at Semaphore Workers Club, Towballs, Three Brothers Arms, and other regional venues around Gawler, Mannum and Victor Harbour.
