Walking into Primal, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but it quickly became clear this was no ordinary circus or cabaret. The show delivers an electrifying blend of aerial artistry, burlesque, fire, and music, all woven together in a high-energy spectacle that keeps the audience hooked from start to finish.

The cast demonstrates extraordinary strength, skill, and grace, with each act bringing its own moment of surprise and daring. There’s a playful cheekiness throughout the performance that perfectly matches the show’s wild, untamed spirit — and yes, at times the spectacle is bold enough that you might be grateful for the comfort of a glass of wine in hand…or perhaps, no hands needed 😜

The undeniable standout of the evening is Leather Lungs, the powerhouse MC and vocalist whose presence completely elevates the production. Their voice is nothing short of breathtaking — rich, commanding, and capable of filling the entire space with emotion. At moments, their vocal range evokes the dramatic brilliance associated with legends like Freddie Mercury and Adam Lambert. A proud member of the Ngāi Tahu iwi, one particularly moving moment comes during a song performed in Māori, which brought a powerful sense of connection and genuine emotion to the room.

Combined with stunning costumes, charismatic performances, and a host who knows exactly how to command an audience, Primal becomes more than just a show — it’s a thrilling, immersive experience that leaves a lasting impression long after the final applause.

A bold, cheeky, and wildly entertaining night out.
