Inside every fringe festival dweller is the desire for a little bit of glamour with a dash of glitter (I didn’t mean literally but that too, it being festival season which means it’s raining sparkles like it’s raining men!) The sublime Evana de Lune doesn’t fail to deliver with her fringe production, Burlesque with Evana De Lune. She has curated an internationally acclaimed line-up hosted by the MC tasty treat that is Tito Bonito (USA) and features the world number one ranked burlesque dancer, Jessabelle Thunder (USA).
From the minute luminous Evana steps on stage, you can feel the Old Hollywood glamour from the showgirl golden age. There is a different variety of styles and props utilised within each dance by the artists yet overall what creatively unifies this production is gorgeous choreography, dazzling costumes, a great soundtrack, a beautifully lit stage and most importantly, dancers at the top of their game who know when to tease, when to serve it hot and when to hit hard. The ring side seats of the crowd were sold out on the night I went to see this show, so keen audience members best get in early on the tickets to the good seats in the Vault.
The other burlesque showstoppers part of this tour are Cierra Bliss (USA), Basjia, Yvette Santos, Full Cream Kitty, Lily LaRoy and Roxie Bordeaux. I particularly enjoyed Tito’s boylesque number to Britney Spears’ Circus and Full Cream Kitty is definitely my favourite new showgirl as I’m a cat person (it’s that special blend of kitten sex appeal, pussy cat sass and feline languidness.) If you’re only going to one fringe event this year, this is definitely the one to pick as it’s the best of the burlesque.
In addition to touring sell out shows across the globe, Evana De Lune also teaches dance workshops all around the world and she has some scheduled middle of the year in both Adelaide and Melbourne. I was very lucky to be able take a day of burlesque classes (Burlesque 101, Slow & Sensual and my favourite, Femme Fatale) with her before the Adelaide Fringe started.
Evana is an excellent teacher and her burlesque classes are a great place to refine individual technique, style and just have fun in a very sex positive space that I felt very comfortable exploring how my body works when dancing in the burlesque style. I feel more confident and empowered in my femininity after these workshops, especially the Femme Fatale themed one where I learned the basics of dancing with a scarf! The serving of face and sex appeal are under construction.
