We are spoilt for choice when it comes to high standard acrobatics in Fringe this year and Haus of Yolo raises the bar yet again!
Utilising the cast’s full talents and abilities Haus of Yolo showcases the now quadruple threats of song, dance, acting and acrobatics in a narrative way unique to this writer.
An alternative and surreal reality is provided to us, one where the Haus of Yolo searches for meaning to its existence in the fickle world of fashion. Their grand couturier possesses each “meat puppet” in search of the greatest collection the world has ever seen.
And then an overlocker appears.
Haus of Yolo creates in multiple ways as they are on stage. Their acts are at times blindingly beautiful so much as to silence the audience in enthrallment, at other times fierce and confronting. Each performer uses their skills or apparatus to evoke the sentiment of the narrative enabling a stunning flow of storyline in the chaos of the transformations.
Their explorations of the body as a flexible form hold a dichotomy, both humanising and dehumanising as “Welt” passes through each one of them. Each possession makes more and more fast fashion in a feverish pace to attain greatness.
There was plenty of audience interaction further solidifying the connection to the performers in this happily and increasingly bizarre story.
A countdown clock further serves to increase the fervour when we reach the end and the final reveals. They are very satisfying.
Haus of Yolo has created a challenging, unique and beautiful performance which has more depth and layers of interpretation the more you think on it.
This show will stay with you in all the right ways. A deeply enjoyable and hilariously heartfelt time.
