“Fast switches bold voices, and jokes that don’t ask permission – Mooney at Full Tilt!”
Lawrence Mooney’s Full Moon Party is exactly what longtime fans expect: sharp, unapologetic, and gleefully skirting the edge of good taste. Moving effortlessly between characters, Mooney builds a fast‑paced hour that feels chaotic by design, yet carefully controlled beneath the surface.
Among the standout personas is Dr Tyler Wall, the self‑styled AFL mindset coach whose pseudo‑psychological wisdom skewers modern sports culture with brutal accuracy. Equally amusing are the “French insights” of Jean Le Camembert, delivering mock‑intellectual observations with just enough continental smugness to make them irresistible. Closer to home, Gavin Muntberry, a prominent supporter of Port Power and a recognised critic of the Adelaide Crows, delivers a performance that offers insightful and relatable observations on game days and Port Adelaide customs. Audiences in Adelaide find this character particularly relatable, connecting with his quirks and humour as if he’s speaking directly to their own experiences..
Mooney’s impersonations are another highlight. His take on Russell Crowe captures the actor’s gruff intensity and self‑importance, while the Malcolm Turnbull impression leans into clipped diction and political confidence, earning knowing laughs without overstaying its welcome. What really elevates the show is how smoothly Mooney switches between these voices, often mid‑story, without losing momentum.
The humour is frequently inappropriate and deliberately provocative, but never lazy. Every joke lands, and the energy and confidence keep the audience fully engaged and laughing. Full Moon Party is not a show for the easily offended, but for those willing to go along for the ride, it delivers a relentless, character-driven comedy experience that showcases Mooney at his most fearless and finely tuned.
Lawrence Mooney continues at The Box at The Garden of Unearthly Delights until 22 March.
