If you thought kid-friendly shows were just a simple concept, with silly jokes and lots of yelling and screaming, then think again. Junk Yard Beats brings Junklandia to the stage, which carries a strong conservation message and a tech-heavy performance that I’ve rarely seen in any Adelaide Fringe show, let alone a family-friendly one.
Three aliens from the planet Junklandia are sent on a mission to Earth to teach the planet about recycling. Tired of our planet sending all its junk into space (and Junklandia), these three adventurers must first dodge many strange obstacles to reach their rocket ship before taking the trip to Earth to complete their mission. The end result is plenty of music and mayhem, singing and stomping and frivolity and fun.
As mentioned, this show is tech heavy, with plenty of lighting changes, music and sound effects. What is so amazing about it all is that the three performers (Tom, Tania and Kobe) never miss a beat. Whether they’re stick fighting, brushing their teeth or zipping about the stage, they hit their sound cues absolutely perfectly. It is really impressive and increased this reviewer's appreciation of the artists’ mastery of their craft.
Junklandia’s reduce, reuse, recycle message is always there in the background, but I never felt like I was being belted over the head with it. The kids in my audience looked like they were having a great time, and the crowd participation kept their interest high from start to finish. Although adults may struggle to relate to a lot of what is being conveyed onstage, this is a kids' show and hits all the sweet spots that they will love. Singing, laughing and lots of noise made with everyday objects found around the house, what more could you ask for? Just be prepared for your kitchen pots to go missing after the kids come home from this show!
