Best of Adelaide Fringe Comedy – Review

A packed night of laughs greeted audiences at the Marion Cultural Centre for the Best of Adelaide Fringe Comedy, a showcase featuring an impressive lineup of international and local stand-up talent.

Hosting duties were in the capable hands of the ever-energetic Nik Coppin, who kept the evening moving with quick wit and warm crowd interaction while introducing each act with enthusiasm.

Opening the show, Australian comedian Nick Schuller delivered dry, perfectly timed satirical humour with a deadpan style that quietly built into big laughs. He was followed by Scottish-born comedian David Callan, who charmed the audience with storytelling comedy centred on his journey toward Australian citizenship — blending cultural observations with sharp punchlines.

After a short interval, the second half kicked off with Jay Michael, proudly representing Elizabeth. His relatable and hilarious stories about growing up in the suburbs struck a chord with the audience, producing some of the night’s biggest laughs.

Closing the show was towering Canadian comic Dion Owen, whose set mixed political observations with commentary on international relations and life across different countries. His confident stage presence and smart material brought the evening to a strong finish.

All four comedians showcased excellent timing and professionalism, delivering a consistently entertaining night. The variety of styles — from deadpan satire to storytelling and observational comedy — kept the audience engaged from start to finish.

In a festival known for its huge range of performances, this showcase stood out as one of the most enjoyable comedy nights in recent memory. Sometimes the best remedy is simply to laugh — and this show delivered plenty of laughs.
