St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral is a Gothic Revival in the Early English style building and the foundation stone was laid in 1856 officially opened in 1858. During the Adelaide Fringe until Sun, 22 March you can see the spectacular light show within the church building. The 20-25 minute illuminated wonder is cleverly displayed to capture the intricate details of the inside pillars and altar. Most churches are known for their tranquil surroundings, this light show elevates that vibe with the peaceful and reflective lighting shining amongst the columns and ceiling.

The illuminated projections enhanced the beauty of the already magnificent cathedral and the lighting made you appreciate the architectural detail. The modern light show brought the almost 170 year old building into a new era and juxtaposing the old and new somehow worked well. It brought the grey old building alive! Bright colours of purple, red, maroon, yellow, blue and green made it some kind of psychedelic church experience. If only the transitions were even more animated towards the end to close with a bigger bang, but it still doesn’t take away from the whole experience.

The lights, the sound, the architectural surroundings stimulated your senses all the while sitting in contemplation. With the angelic vocals of the Goodwood choir singing Vivaldi and traditional hymns, the music is haunting, spiritual and healing at the same time. Cathedral Chiaroscuro is a wonder worth seeing!
