As the Fiji Fringe Festival lies fallow for a year, Fiji Traveller sends news from her Australian sister, the Adelaide Fringe Festival.
From Tuesday to Sunday every evening of the Adelaide Fringe, moments from Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga, the interior architecture of the St Francis Xavier cathedral has been illuminated with carefully constructed light shows combined with choral and classical music to the delight of local audiences in their hundreds.
Waiting outside the anticipation builds as the previous crowds file out swooning and using adjectives like “wonderful”, “breathtaking” and “spectacular”.
And the show certainly lives up to that hype as the 170 year old structure bursts into life with kaleidoscopic pinks, reds and purples, dances with multicoloured and multihued swirls and shapes that match the musical accompaniments and map the walls, before bursting forth into ecstatic gardens of green, blue and yellow.
In a particularly twenty first century flourish: if, like me, you stand at the back, you also bear witness to a sea of mobile phone screens rising and falling like waves, capturing, refracting and reflecting the stunning show.
Cathedral Chiaroscuro continues until Sunday 22nd March. More details and tickets here.
