15 Year old Elon Musk the 90’s Karaoke musical is a product of the mind of St John Smith. Wild, high concept and a little but nuts which all adds to the most unexpected Karaoke show you will see this season.
A very intimate space, the audience meets Smith when entering the room. The setting of the show is reportedly in a very expensive South African hospital as our young protagonist has suffered a significant head injury. After a quick costume change, Smith leaves and a 15 year old Elon Musk reemerges. The lad is nice, polite, quietly spoken and perhaps as a result of the concussion he is currently suffering from, more than willing to strike up a conversation with a photojournalist he meets at the hospital. It is a wild ride from there as the journalist tells Musk his future.
You would best describe this show as classic fringe. Quite raw and unashamedly unrefined, it is enjoyably honest in that regard. With all its proceeds being donated to a Sudan relief fundraiser, Smith makes the point that he is doing more to help the Sudan famine than the real Elon Musk is. It would be fair to say the audience needs to be committed to the concept of the show. There are a number of karaoke moments with some excellent songs that the audience is encouraged to join in. It would be unwise to go to a karaoke show if you do not enjoy singing in public. However, this is a low effort environment with a very welcoming, and notably forgiving, Musk who’s unexpectedly positive attitude is somewhat infectious. It is fair to Smith that he does emphasise how an individual’s upbringing can have a significant influence on the person they become. The Elon Smith describes has redeeming features and was at some point, an innocent and decent person. A worthwhile journey if you enjoy something different that, in the end, is for a good cause.
