Just when it seems like everyone you know is going on holiday to Japan, the chance to experience some traditional culture up close has arrived in Adelaide.

For the first time outside of Japan, the Sumo Show HIRAKUZA introduced us to Matsu, Waka and Toma - three former pro wrestlers who, with the help of an MC/translator, explained the history behind Japan’s national sport and demonstrated some warm-ups, forbidden moves and winning techniques.

Once we were all up to speed, a three-way competition played out, spurred on by cheers from the crowd as the personality-filled competitors quickly gained fans.

Equally entertaining was watching some brave audience members take on the pros, looking the part in foam sumo suits and putting their newly acquired knowledge to the test. As they prepared to take to the stage, the rest of us had the opportunity to ask questions.

Some loud drumming opens the show in a dark tent, which is appropriately dramatic for the show, but may be intense for younger visitors. Nerves quickly faded for our eight-year-old reviewer, as he realised nobody was being hurt and the performers let their funny sides (and their backsides) show.

“I regret saying that I didn’t want to come to this,” he said. “It’s the best!”

“It’s amazing and hilarious,” said the 10-year-old. “I would tell my friends they have to go and challenge the wrestlers”.

If you’re looking to broaden your family’s Fringe experience beyond circus classics and toilet humor, the all-ages Sumo Show HIRAKUZA might be just what you need. It was a sell-out crowd, so arrive early and sit centrally for the best view of the stage.
