For over twenty year, UK-born Georgie Carroll worked in the healthcare system as a nurse in both the UK and Australia. Now she calls Australia home and has switched from the emergency department to stand-up comedy stages across the globe. This Adelaide Fringe, Georgie brings her new show Infectious to the Garden of Unearthly Delights, and it’s the comedy physical we all need.
As a nurse, Georgie has seen it all. Infectious is built upon her experiences working in hospitals both here in Australia and in the UK. As she puts it, ‘it’s a lot of staff room gossip’. Her stories are hilarious and packed with punchlines. Georgie’s comedy is very conversational in style, but she is very gentle with her audience. You never feel she is there to humiliate people for a laugh.
As you would expect, the majority of the audience consists of medical professionals. On the night I attended, I was seated next to a group of emergency room nurses on a team night out who lapped up every story, every fact, and every moment of Infectious. Georgie spends a portion of her show talking directly to her audience, getting to know the different medical professions represented. Her wealth of knowledge of the Australian media industry is vast, resulting in some brilliant improv with her audience.
You don’t need to be a medical professional to see Georgie. I’m not, and I cannot wait to be able to see her again. Her standup material is excellent. There is no deep message hidden in the show like some comedians try to shoehorn into their material. Georgie proudly tells you she is here so we can all have a good time and feel good about life, with a dose of vitamin laughter. You certainly get that — sign me up for the booster shot.
