Little Miss Typecast is a one woman show for any theatre hopeful who longs to break out of the box that casting directors have locked them into. Chloe Halley is a singing and dancing pocket rocket, struggling to break away from playing child roles well into adulthood.
Chloe tells her life story with a cheeky smile and plenty of humour, and it is the way she engages with the audience during these narratives that is the real star of the show. Chloe is warm and funny, and really draws her audience into the stories (such as being cast as Brigitta for the 4th time).
The show is interspersed with song and dance, with the show opening with the iconic child star number, I Was Born To Entertain, complete with tap solo. Chloe’s dancing was excellent, and was definitely a highlight of the show, as were her moments of physical comedy.
Chloe has a beautiful voice, and while most of the time her training shone through with an excellent music theatre tone, the songs sometimes became a little pitchy on higher notes if Chloe was focusing on a comedic moment or working with a prop.
The main weakness in this overall highly entertaining show was the ending. After Chloe makes a statement in an effort to appear more adult (I won’t give spoilers), the show simply ends, flowing into the thank yous without warning. It would have been good to have a blackout or an epilogue of some kind to give the audience more closure (maybe shifting to the closing song before the thank yous). I would love to see this show again in a few years time, with a little more workshopping behind it, especially as the majority of the performance is so engaging and entertaining.
Overall, this show has loads of potential, and this is a great opportunity to support an up and coming performer.
