Japanese Liquor and Laughs is a cultural experience that manages to be both genuinely educational and delightfully amusing. Part tasting, part storytelling, and part informal masterclass, the show invites audiences to explore Japanese drinking culture through sake and shōchū, all while having an excellent time doing so.
From the first pour, the experience feels warm and accessible. Guests are guided through tastings of sake and shōchū while learning the key differences between the two, from flavour profiles to production methods. The show clearly explains how sake is fermented, how shōchū is distilled, and why those processes matter, without ever feeling dry or overly technical. Instead, the information is shared naturally throughout the afternoon, making it easy to take in even if you’re new to Japanese liquor.
What truly elevates the experience is the storytelling. David, an ex‑journalist who has lived and travelled extensively around the world, brings humour, insight and curiosity to every anecdote. His stories about drinking culture in Japan; when people drink, how it fits into daily life, and the social rituals around it are funny, revealing and often impressively insightful.
Above all, Japanese Liquor and Laughs strikes a perfect balance. It’s fun without being frivolous, educational without being heavy, and enlightening without ever talking down to the audience. Whether you’re a spirits enthusiast or simply curious, it’s an engaging, memorable afternoon that leaves you both informed and smiling.
While it’s not strictly a comedy show, it’s quite entertaining and often makes you laugh. You leave feeling mentally invigorated, gaining insights not only into Japanese spirits but also into the unique and intriguing customs and traditions of the culture.
Japanese Liquor and Laughs: A Comedy Tasting Show continues In The Maple Room at Dom Polski Centre until 22 March.
