Dame Granny Smith – the icon, the legend – returns to Adelaide Fringe for an intimate conversation, supported perfectly by ventriloquist David Salter as her interviewer.
The Dame arrives with the poise, grace, and delusion of an old Hollywood star. A sweet-yet-tart demeanour that is oh so delicious. Yes, her attitude may be a little bit rude, but she does it with decorum. She gets as much as she gives, however, as David comes back with a biting humour that also cuts at the Dame’s peel. The interviewer packs in bushels of side-splitting apple puns while the pair trade barbs as if they were Joan Crawford and Bette Davis themselves.
This witty repartee is only a part of David Salter’s outstanding writing, however, as these juicy quips make way for an emotional journey that slowly unpeels until we reach not only Dame Granny Smith at her core, but David too. What seems like a simple premise of a man interviewing an apple becomes a touching reflection on ageing, aspirations and missed opportunities.
David Salter’s masterful ventriloquism transforms a humble apple into a rich and complex character that will have you transfixed until the last bite. A must see!
