Millicent Sarre Is Too Tired to Smash (Patriarchy)
The Kingfisher at Gluttony
Wed Feb 25 2026

Millicent Sarre opens her show singing about how hard it is getting all our ducks in a row these days. That appears easy enough while walking around the pond in Rymill Park on this balmy evening. You'll find the ducks sticking together and lining up, no doubt baffled by the invasive crowds flocking to the food and to the many venues. That said, in these hectic, challenging times one of the few other places these birds do line up is in this show.

She documents in delightfully crafted songs how it feels like we're staggering from one crisis to another, while absorbing by osmosis the onslaught of global wars and disasters. We are all able to relate to her difficulty in digitally disconnecting, and to the fear of how this can lead down a slippery slope to complacency and apathy. But the variety of song styles and genres makes these themes more than palatable.

Her gorgeous voice and amazing vocal range is subtly but superbly controlled to accord perfectly nuanced modulations. The clever lyrics are sharp, witty and right on the money, accompanied by totally professional musical skills. This live performance is only slightly augmented with minimal tech, keeping it fresh and vibrant, intimate and enthralling.

The feminist message is clear and honest: the emotional load is a burden unless shared by men, who need to step up beyond these roles. Better still, start dismantling some of the privilege they take for granted. Sarre's sensitivity is expressed beautifully in heart-felt, positive feelings shining through some final uplifting songs. Their simplicity is only the more powerful when the chorus is sung by all present.

The hour together goes all too quickly. Perhaps I'm still digesting the quantity of words packed into this musical theatre. But given the quality of the entertainment it was a pleasure to share this show with such a large audience. Better book soon should you wish to catch this unique original talent.
