Shake It is an institution at the Adelaide Fringe, by institution I mean an insane of asylum of the Adelaide Fringe’s most filthy and disgustingly HAWT burlesque, cabaret and circus acts. Hosted by pink bouffanted, pint sized pocket rocket, Minnie Andrews, with ensemble repeat offenders, Jace Gonçalves and Sian Brigid, the show features a variety of guest performers over the festival season.
The Saturday night crowd was as raucous and rabid as we got to enjoy antics of super freak, Sian Brigid. She performed the most hostile burlesque act I’ve ever seen and yet the audience were eating her bird flipping sass up.
However it’s important to not think of this as a one note show. It has moments of the sublimely such as Jace Gonçalves performing aerials accompanied by Minnie’s superb vocals singing live to the ridiculously and joyously kitsch finale hoop routine to Like A Prayer. However, for me THE moment of show that really made it special in opening weekend was hearing Minnie sharing a very vulnerable bit of her soul belt out Maybe This Time.
