Fritz is a magician’s rabbit, not a magician, and that’s the premise of The Fritz Magic(ish) Show. When Madame Magica fails to turn up for her own scheduled show, her loyal rabbit Fritz takes it upon herself to entertain the crowd. With little magic ability, Fritz has to adapt on the fly to keep up the appearance of a magic show, and she does this with charm and humour.
This isn’t a magic show. It’s a clown show. Or at least, that’s the closest definition I could think of. Magic is attempted, kind of, but in a show aimed at young kids, it’s the slapstick and silliness that ensures the laughs.
Billed as a show for 5 to 13-year-olds, we witnessed middle aged men belly laughing, and barely-walking toddlers participating with smiles. There is a good amount of crowd participation, and those called upon to join Fritz on the stage were at no point the butt of the joke.
Playing at The Factory in The Garden of Unearthly Delights, the venue is impressive in almost every way. Right down to the excellent air conditioning which has become an essential feature for Adelaide Fringe venues (for performers and audiences alike). It’s a shame that its splendor is too easily forgotten when you’re continually uncomfortable from the awful seating.
This is a charming little show that kids love. You won’t regret taking your kids, and it’s one of the reasonably priced shows at this year’s Adelaide Fringe. Some adults will be checking their watch regularly, but this is a kids show, so that’s not relevant.
Playing until March 9th, this is a good one if you can get in on a weekday, but there’s plenty of weekend performances as well. It’s a big venue, but it’d still be worthwhile getting your tickets online rather than the door, just to be safe.
