Show rating: I was dancing in my chair, 4 stars!

That’s Me In The Corner takes its title from the R.E.M iconic song, “Losing My Religion”, an international pub anthem and is the feel good, singalong show for everyone who has ever spent time at an Aussie bar. I know I am guilty of finding myself absorbing the words to hits like Van Morrison’s Brown Eyed Girl by osmosis as you wait for the meat raffle (ironically this viewing of the show was full of vegetarians who did not actually want the meat raffle door prize in life imitating art.)

Gigz (aka Michael Giglio) is a pub musician who explores the very human stories behind the songs people musical requests and talks about finding an elusive musical g-spot where the songs begin and end with that human connection. It had moments of levity and moments of raw emotional depth as it Gigz explores the bond between musician and listener. It asks the why behind the what you love musically.

This is a clever piece of musical comedy that was enjoyable and easy to engage with. Michael Giglio is an energetic and intelligent performer who had the audience laughing hard with his anecdotes of the lifestyle of a muso menaced by the “Davos”, pokies and the average Australian pub culture. He is a solid musician and has better than average comedic timing but absolutely shines as a storyteller especially when working with mundane material like the pub scene. I recommend it for those who find themselves wanting light entertainment without necessarily needing to brave the bigger crowds and venues at the Adelaide Fringe.

I saw this show at the General Havelock and definitely need to heap some love on them as an accessible venue with excellent food, very nice facilities and top rated customer service. It definitely is a gastropub I’d plan into making an excellent night out of going to see That’s Me In The Corner!
