If you've ever wondered why Inferno has had multiple sold-out months at Nineteen Ten and keeps returning to the Adelaide Fringe, then you need to see it with your own eyes. Inferno has built a well-deserved reputation for captivating audiences with jaw-dropping fiery spectacles and equally fiery performers. And now, in their third year at the Adelaide Fringe, their power has not waned.
The line-up is a stellar blend of local and interstate fire masters bringing their unique talents alight on stage with dynamic demonstrations of the medium of fire. Expect the likes of Icarus Aflame, Ekstasis, and Striga Ashes, just to name a few. Our seductive hostess of the night is one Clara Fable, iconic burlesque performer and fire eater. She’s a seriously charismatic guide who introduces each performer between her cheeky quips and teasing ( and even indulges us with a luscious musical number).
The staples of the art are all here to be indulged, with multiple instruments of fire-wielding represented in top form. Dynamic and ethereal uses of emblazoned hoops, juggling poi and contact staff cut intricate patterns of flame through shadow. Seductive dance pieces with blazing chairs, guitars and even high heels light up the night in spectacular fashion. Each discipline has something worthy to be awed at. But some unexpectedly niche arts make it into the mix courtesy of Jessy Spin, adorning a flaming skirt in resplendent red.
The song selection is a bit of a mixed bag in an otherwise perfect show, which is more an observation from one’s personal preference. Most of the tracks seamlessly complement the visual power of their respective performer, many utilising provocative EDM, pop and grunge to great effect. Others use cover songs that have a certain movie trailer music quality, which, while dramatic, feels a bit homogenic in modern performance spaces (I’m also personally not a fan of Ewen McGregor’s cover of “Roxanne”; that vibrato pulled me out of an otherwise spectacular performance). Let that not be a major detractor, though, because the performers clearly indulge in every minute they’re on stage.
Nothing comes close to this unique spectacle crafted on home soil. Inferno is a near-perfect full-course meal of incredible circus craft. It’s a night of non-stop action and sex appeal with a scorching, talented ensemble determined to captivate you. It’ll be seared into your memory long after the last flame has gone out!
