Internationally acclaimed South Australian improv company, Changing Jennifers, have returned to the Adelaide Fringe once again this year, with their 2025 sell out show, Improvised Movie Mash-Up. As with all improvised shows, each and every one is unique, never to be seen again. But Changing Jennifers make sure that each one is equal to or better in hilarity.
How does it work? I’m glad you asked (otherwise this review might be incredibly short).
Our hosts, Eden and Sam (one assumes that it is the same Jennifers every show), both have a video tape of their favourite movie that they want to show us. The audience get to pick the movies. On the night reviewed, Sam’s side of the audience decided by quite a majority that his movie was Ghost, whilst Eden’s side (the one this reviewer was on) went with the only suggestion (wait for it) K-Pop Demon Hunters. What to watch??? The only thing to do was, of course, mash them up! Hence, we had K-Pop Ghost Hunters!
The guys were absolutely brilliant, thinking on their feet and being crazily physical every second of the hour show. Because Ghost was involved, there had to be THAT scene involving a pottery wheel (maybe even steamier than the original) and we were encouraged to sing Unchained Melody if we knew the words (some knew the words but not the melody lol). It’s that sort of terrific lunacy one can expect whatever performance they see.
Eden and Sam showed their excellent expertise and improv skills all the way through and seemed to know what the other was thinking before they thought it. There was no overlapping of dialogue, but plenty of cracking up because of us cracking up – just what we want and need in this type of show.
It is quite evident from watching these two very fine and fast thinking performers, why Changing Jennifers are so popular and sought after; and why Improvised Movie Mash-Up was sold out last year, as I’m sure it will be this year.
