5 Stars for an immersive experience where art, music and stunning architecture meet.

If you’re after a Fringe experience with a difference, add this event to your list. Set in St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral, just moments from Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga, this immersive event, which combines projected light with choral and classical music, creates a moment of calm and beauty.

True to its name, Cathedral Chiarascuro highlights the finer details of the cathedral’s stunning architecture. While the side aisles remain in shadow, the nave is illuminated, drawing attention to the timber beams, stained-glass windows, arches, carved stonework, and the ethereal sanctuary.

It’s worth noting that St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral has a long history, stretching back to1856, when the foundation stone was laid. It was dedicated in 1858 and is the oldest Catholic Cathedral in Australia. It was built in stages, with the bell tower completed in 1996 to fulfil the original plans.

The cathedral provides the perfect canvas for the beautiful projected patterns and artworks – just sit back, relax and enjoy the moment.
