Remember those line dancing lessons and group choreography classes that were a staple of primary school classrooms? Now imagine them as a fun, interactive nostalgia romp with a live band and a healthy dose of rhinestone cowboy chic. That's the magic of Boombox Bootscoot, who return to the Fringe with their eclectic mix of country covers and their infectious boot-stomping grooves.

The 6-piece crew is an energetic arrangement heavy with twanging banjo, bass and fiddle, with vocalisations from Mikala and Shelby offering fantastic harmonisation with their dulcet tones. They switch effortlessly across pop classics from the 80s and 90s, with special cameo appearances from two professional line dancers kicking their feet to the beat. You’ll hear everything from “Come On Eileen” to “Take On Me” to a compilation of theme songs from classic sitcoms. The medleys of grunge bands from the 90s were an unexpected delight and clearly the fan favourites. You haven’t lived until you’ve heard Pearl Jam and Rage Against the Machine in a country hoedown medley.

The trendy Plant 4 location gives the crowd ample room to strut their stuff and hoedown to their hearts' content. People clearly got the memo: cowboy hats, bright patterns and loud printed shirts aplenty in this crowd. Adelaide festival goers can be notoriously reserved, but that restraint was pleasantly low amongst this crowd. Dozens took to the dance floor to get a crash course in line dancing and lean into the cheesy yet wholesome fun. If you're after a simple sit-down affair with low energy, this ain't the show for you!

This is definitely one for the country lovers and anyone who’s ever enjoyed the delight of group dancing. Boombox Bootscoot is a sweet and charming time, an easy show for adults and kids alike to enjoy. Check it out if you need somewhere to show off your new cowboy boots: there’s yeehaws aplenty and dancing heavily encouraged.
