When you are a stand-up comedian like Zoltan attending the Adelaide Fringe for the first time, you’d want everything to go right. Being new to the comedy scene, he’s only been honing his craft for two years; still, with a Saturday night crowd at the Duke of York Hotel, you’d expect good vibes and good energy for the stand-up show titled Bio-Logical. Well, the good vibes were there; unfortunately, the good energy that Zoltan would have been hoping for was not.

Bio-Logical is a show that Zoltan still seems to be figuring out. This San Francisco native was formerly a biology teacher before pursuing his interest in comedy. Using his knowledge of biology, Zoltan has cleverly crafted a series of humorous stories, slides and jokes that mix the world of biology and life into one funny package.

One standout in Bio-Logical that I particularly enjoyed was the audience members getting a couple of QR codes before the show. Two questions to answer were ‘what is your favourite animal’ and ‘in which country did you experience a culture shock’. This segment really brought the crowd to life as they got to talk to Zoltan and share their experiences. Zoltan would use those answers to throw out a funny biology fact or use them to set up his next joke. I would have loved him to explore the answers further, as we seemed to just rush through it at a cracking pace. And that is how the show felt as a whole: a little bit rushed. The fifty-minute stand-up performance was completed in forty minutes, and I think it had more to do with the crowd's energy than the jokes themselves. When a joke fell flat, Zoltan just seemed to rush to the next segment, not allowing the show to breathe. In saying that, though, I think it’s a thing that a lot of new comedians go through and learn from.

Bio-Logical is a good show but not a great show… yet. With a few tweaks here and there, and more time on the stage, I think he’ll become more comfortable with crowd interaction and the show's timing. Unfortunately, it was the Adelaide audience that didn’t help this comedian on this particular night. Still, if you like your jokes with a touch of biology added in, then you’ll laugh and learn at Bio-Logical.
