When a show at the Adelaide Fringe stars a veteran Broadway singer, you’d think that it is a no-brainer that it will receive five stars. But, as a reviewer, I don’t see it that way. My expectations for reviewing Philippa Lynas were so high that I was looking for any little fault, misstep, or off-key note that wouldn’t make it five stars. I mean, how good could a first show go? Well, as far as Eleven O’clock on the Dot went, I’d say pretty much perfect!
With a sold-out crowd in attendance at Plant 4, I knew we’d be in for a great night. The three-piece band accompanying Philippa really set the mood for the evening, with their black suits contrasting with Philippa’s bright, red jumpsuit beautifully. A small introduction was all that was needed before she belted out many classic songs from Broadway shows of the past. I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about Broadway music, but Philippa put me in my place quickly. Her knowledge of stars and songs is fascinating, and she has a passion for this business that is infectious. Even though I may not have known many of the songs, I sat in quiet admiration at this amazing woman’s vocal control and strength. The way she flipped from talking like the country girl who grew up in the Barossa Valley to singing like a Broadway starlet was extraordinary. While the way she strutted the stage, like a proud peacock in full shimmer, was an absolute joy to behold. This woman didn’t just grace the stage; she owned it.
Over the course of a whirlwind hour, the receptive audience had the pleasure of hearing Broadway numbers from the likes of Carousel, Company, Gypsy and even Grease. Interwoven throughout the performance was a Broadway history lesson, as well as many little-known facts about Broadway performers and playwrights. Eleven O’clock on the Dot had it all, and I can’t forget to mention just how good the live band was, which elevated Philippa’s performance to another level. The Adelaide Fringe has NEVER sounded so good!
***** Five stars
