Looking for a show with a unique twist on musical cabaret? You might just want to check out Sink Or Sing, where every audience member is encouraged to sing loud and proud. Amelie Peters is an experienced vocal coach and vocalist on a mission to create a positive space for everyone to bring out their inner pop star.

Armed with a six-piece live band, Peters shares an hour of her original songs, each one deeply personal and full of self-deprecating humour. Between serenading the crowd, she walks us through various vocal exercises and gives us a crash course in group harmonisation (along with the funniest use of the Do Re Mi solfège scale you’ll see in musical theatre). It’s a hilarious and endearing show where audiences can expect to join in on songs such as “Dates Aren’t Your Mates”, “I Got Hole In My Undies”, and my personal favourite “I’m Going to Make Fairy Bread”.

Peters is a natural performer and a wholesome presence on the stage. She effortlessly guides her audience on her journey of self-discovery and her mission to make singing an empowering and self-affirming experience for not just herself but her entire audience. Cabaret, by its nature, is a forum where personal inhibitions and reservations can be challenged, and the interactive nature of Sink Or Sing creates such a platform wherein attendees can feel free to raise their voices without fear of embarrassment. Peters encourages us to embrace vulnerability and the power of the voice to rise above our insecurities and fulfil our need for self-expression.

Singing solo is no doubt intimidating when done outside the safety of your shower or car. But that didn’t stop fellow show-goers from joining in on the fun. The fact that Peters could get so many Adelaide locals to sing their hearts out was incredibly impressive (try getting the average Adelaidean to publicly speak in front of a crowd and you’ll see why). It’s a perfect material for a ladies' night out, but make no mistake: this is a show for anyone with a little bit of theatre kid energy that needs to let loose.

Sink Or Sing! is simply joyous, unbridled fun. It’s unpretentious and heartfelt as it celebrates the power of the human voice and collective cheer. It’s a shared experience that is sure to delight karaoke lovers and cabaret enthusiasts alike.
