If you are looking to instil a love of the Adelaide Fringe in your small child, Bubba-Licious is perfect. If you are a parent, you will know that keeping a young child engaged is no easy feat, but Bubba-Licious delivers a captivating performance for babies and toddlers.

When you first step inside the Ukiyo tent it may seem like a simple setup, but as the lights dim you will be repeatedly surprised by the clever use of music, manipulation of light, and puppetry. Your favourite nursery rhymes and songs are brought to life by well thought out and visually interesting effects. ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ is sung as the tent is filled with ‘stars’ (or more commonly known as a disco ball) and ‘Der-Glumf’ is paired with dancing frog puppets lit behind the white set wall. It may sound simple, but ideas and the precise lighting cues have a stunning effect. Blue scarves transform into glistening water; friendly creatures walk through the crowd and fairy-lit butterflies fly overhead. The room is a sea of mesmerised faces, big and small. The big finale includes an explosion of bubbles and balloons which we were given as we left. Performed by an enthusiastic and passionate cast, it is no surprise that this show continues to return to the Fringe and receive awards. You won’t want it to end.

Babies and toddlers will get the best experience sitting on their floor with their adults, but which can be a bit squashed. If you are unable to bend that way, there is also seating where you can still enjoy yourself. This well-oiled machine of a show lasts only 30 minutes which is perfect for those short attention spans and leaves some time to explore Gluttony before nap time.
