Back by popular demand, Maho Magic Bar has returned for its fourth Adelaide Fringe season at the Garden of Unearthly Delights.
I’ve wanted to go for years and never quite got around to it, so there was plenty of intrigue as I followed the glow of neon lights, past the hanging Japanese lanterns and into a moody space that feels like a hidden backstreet bar in Tokyo.
The bar is set up across five intimate performance areas, with guests seated right around each one so you’re up close to every trick. A rotating troupe of magicians and illusionists moves between tables, giving you the chance to experience each performer’s own mix of card magic, illusions and quirky comedy along the way.
Settle in for the hour, order a cocktail (or two), and enjoy the show unfolding around you. The Yuzu Margarita and Shochu Sour were standouts, and there’s also plenty of Japanese sake on the menu for those keen to try something different.
Throughout the performance, guests can order additional magic tricks that are staged in the centre of the room for everyone to see. This was a highlight for me with a wild balloon illusion that unfolded right before my eyes.
If you’re after a party vibe, this is absolutely the show for you. Part bar, part magic show, Maho Magic Bar nails the concept and the cocktails go down a treat.
Secret tip: find the hidden bar afterwards...
