I must admit I was expecting a show jam packed with killer pole routines. The protagonist Andrea James Lui certainly is capable of entertaining an audience for more than an hour with her impeccable skills on the pole. Instead of setting herself apart as the soloist on stage, Lui created a community space by inviting people in to join her and understand the joys of being a pole dancer. Lui made herself vulnerable when she took the audience on a very personal journey which is the road to how she became the absolute powerhouse pole dancer she is today. She shared relatable stories of fears, dreams and anxieties. Lui chose to share her love of pole dancing in a really intimate way. I pole danced in a previous life and I get it, its the kind of dance form that can build you up, reclaim parts of you that you didn’t know where missing and build a community. If you are looking for a show that goes behind the 9 inch pleasers and gives you an idea about why your partner/best friend/ work colleague won’t shut up about their new pole classes and is going to classes every night; this is your show. Show run: 18-22, 25-28 Feb, 1 Mar at 6:50PM @ Fool’s Paradise; The Lab.
