It’s not just wrestling; it’s sumo much more!
Everything you thought you knew about sumo is twisted on its head at The Sumo Show HIRAKUZA. Staged at The Roundhouse at the ever-electric The Garden of Unearthly Delights, this show isn’t a polite cultural footnote or a dusty history lesson. It is loud. It is physical. It is hilariously joyful.
Presented entirely in English, The Sumo Show HIRAKUZA demonstrates that sumo is more than Japan’s national sport; it is a sacred rite. Former professional wrestlers Waka, Matsu and the charismatic Toma act as guides to the traditions, rules, rituals and tactics of sumo. They draw you into the dohyō with their charm and vast physicality.
The dynamic sixty-minute stage production presents the essence of Japanese sumo culture with a comedic twist. The storytelling is clear, cheeky, and genuine. By the time the tomoesen (three-way-playoff) commences, you have warmed to all the wrestlers and are ready to cheer for your favourite.
The proximity of the action is thrilling. This is sumo without the buffer zone. Sweat flies, and bodies thunderously collide until a champion is crowned.
Then, just when you think the show has peaked, the tables are turned with audience participation! Four brave souls – Rory, Storm, John and Renee – don ‘traditional’ garb to go one-on-one with the wrestler of their choice with riotous results.
This show is guaranteed to make you laugh out loud. It will also make you wince, but you will absolutely gain a new respect for the speed, strategy, and athleticism behind every movement and colossal blow.
This is the first time The Sumo Show HIRAKUZA has toured outside Japan. That it is exclusive to South Australis feels like a genuine coup. Authentic, punchy, and endlessly entertaining, this is the Adelaide Fringe at its best.
