There’s a reason why most who travel to Japan find themselves longing to return. Japanese hospitality isn’t just an obligatory etiquette, it’s a cultural identity enriched with warmth, gratitude and humility – and tonight’s show proved it to be a thing of true beauty and wonder.
Set in the intimate Roundhouse tent, The Sumo Show Hirakuza is a theatrical introduction to the ancient art of Sumo wrestling hosted by an endearing MC who narrates the event with unabashed energy and euphoria. Through slapstick humour and serious demonstration, professional Sumo wrestlers, a stunningly dressed referee and our host give a detailed and entertaining insight into the origin and ethics of Sumo wrestling and its unyielding popularity in Japan.
The wrestling matches that occur in between comedic technique simulations transport the audience into an authentic arena with palpable anticipation. As the match becomes more physical, the audience chant and applaud their favourite contestants; the high-octane atmosphere in the tent so intense that my 11-year-old son, bouncing in his seat beside me, is on the verge of losing his voice. The winner is heralded with a hero’s ovation and in that moment the whole experience is beyond intoxicating.
If you’re looking for an immersive cultural experience that caters for all ages, The Sumo Show Hirakuza is an ideal choice for your Fringe calendar. After 60 minutes of humorous narration, highly physical competition and enthusiastic audience participation, I left feeling energised by the drama of this centuries-old sport and inspired by the enchanting nature of Japanese lore.
