Sumo wrestling is serious business in Japan, and being in a position to attend a tournament is rare. Luckily, The Sumo Show HIRAKUZA makes sumo accessible, and in their first performance outside of Japan, these former professional wrestlers bring the magic of the sport to the Adelaide Fringe.

While the seriousness and history of the sport is acknowledged, the show remains lighthearted and wildly entertaining. With the help of the delightful MC, the three sumo stars demonstrate the rituals, warm-ups and rules. Expect some comedic slapstick when they demonstrate banned moves, and marvel at their flexibility – who knew such large men could do the splits!

The wrestlers challenge each other until a champion is crowned, and this is when their skill becomes evident. Whilst some of the fighting is obviously scripted, they’re not holding back. These guys are working hard. The fights show serious grit, followed by cheeky plays to the audience as the fighters and MC hype up the crowd to support their favourite.

Five lucky audience members get the chance to challenge the wrestlers, and this is also highly entertaining. The wrestlers don’t go easy on the challengers, but some did come out victorious. There’s an element of bravery to go head to head with one of these guys, in a puffy sumo suit no less!

At times it can be difficult to hear the MC over the excitement, but this doesn’t detract from the experience. The format of the show is straightforward and easy to understand, which means kids and adults alike will learn about the sport and enjoy the spectacle.

The show moves at a quick pace, making it suitable for young children, and there is an opportunity to have a photo with the wrestlers after the show.
