“Card tricks are cool and all but how good can a whole show about them be?” - remember my ignorant words, folks, because they’re the ones that Dom Chambers made me eat after seeing his amazing show A Boy and His Deck. Yes, I’ll admit, while flicking through the Fringe guide before the Adelaide Fringe had started, I blurted out that comment. But after seeing Dom perform in Fringe show ‘The Purple Rabbit’, I was intrigued as to what this sleight-of-hand card genius could provide in the entertainment stakes. The Factory Theatre in The Garden of Unearthly Delights was packed as my wife and I managed to grab front row seats to watch Chambers in card magic action. It’s a relatively simple story format: Dom tells us about his early years as an aspiring card trickster, and how he always wanted to win favour with a card magician he’d never met or seen before. In between his stories he performs some mind-bending magic, which I’ve always been skeptical about… until it actually happened to me on this night. Ten people, including Beck and I, were asked to pick a random card out of a pack and, over the course of a very entertaining ten minutes, Dom was able to figure out which card each of us had. From one outstanding trick to the next, Dom Chambers showed just how entertaining a show about card tricks can be. I’m not going to give away any spoilers, but this is a man who, although he practiced most of his card magic in the bedroom, is truly a master of his domain. Five Stars *****
