Best known for their larger ensemble, The Tunisian Nights Little Big Band, the members of The Basement boast a long resume in the Adelaide Fringe and other prominent events. Complimenting their work with the TNLBB, where the focus is upon carefully arranged and intricate arrangements and powerful vocal performances, The Basement emphasises creative improvisation on the tunes that jazz lovers will instantly recognise.

As Musical Director and front man for Adelaide swing group “The Tunisian Nights Little Big Band”, Dennis Russell is used to being a musical chameleon. It is a knowledge hard won through 35 years of performing with everything from brass bands to mass choirs, orchestras to heavy rock bands. From swinging as a lead trumpet player in big bands, to writing and performing original music that has been heard all over the world.
His vision for a stripped-down big band has brought classic vocal swing charts back to the audiences of Adelaide since 2018 and has been met with sell out crowds and rave reviews. Now with The Basement, a smaller jazz combo, he explores a more improvisational facet of jazz. Supported by a team of brilliant musicians, they breathe new energy into familiar and loved melodies
