Adventures in Antique Music
Ever imagined what music from 500-1000 years ago sounded like? What is a sackbut, a vielle, a rauschpfeife? We can show you! Come and hear the hits of the European Middle Ages and Renaissance from 800-1600, performed on weird and wonderful authentic old-style instruments, blended with evocative vocals. In one hour, you will experience music that formed the fabric of times gone by, and discover that although centuries have passed, we humans haven’t really changed much – we still love, laugh and cry. Presented by Lyrebyrd Consort, a group whose mission is to perform music from the past, and to explore different sonorities and combinations of musical ideas, to keep the music alive. You have two Adelaide venues to choose from. We look forward to meeting you and transporting you back in time.
Presented by: Lyrebyrd Consort
Lyrebyrd’s mission is to discover and perform rare and evocative music from the past, and to explore different sonorities and combinations of instruments and musical ideas. Music performed by the group ranges from simple unison melodies and lively dances to complex harmonic structures, blending instruments, vocals and percussion.
As well as specialist Medieval and Renaissance performances in the Adelaide Fringe Festival and throughout the year, Lyrebyrd has showcased early music in schools, played in historic Adelaide gardens and homes. These performances are not only about music, but about transporting audiences back to a byegone age, and introducing them to a range of weird and wonderful instruments.
