The Tunnels

Sleeps Hill Tunnel is one of two privately-owned old railway tunnels in the foothills of Panorama, South Australia. Audiences are invited to explore the history of the tunnel from its steam train era to mushroom farm years with mesmerising projections and installations.
The tunnels were built in 1880; as the first ever tunnels built in South Australia, they opened up the line between Adelaide and Melbourne. The tunnels were decommissioned in 1920 when a new tunnel was built to eliminate the problems of sharp bends and an inadequate viaduct. During the war, the tunnels were used to store official Government documents and artworks and prior to The Tunnels Wine Storage, it had been used as a mushroom farm due to its naturally cool climate.
After a runaway success in 2024, Sleeps Hill Tunnel returns in 2025, exclusively for Adelaide Fringe audiences.
