It was difficult to tell who was having more fun in this performance: the kids in the audience, or the big kid on stage surrounded by his toys. Using an array of instruments, his voice, many silly sounds from the audience, and his iconic looping pedals, Adam Page improvised up a storm at this show for kids (and their adults).

Every piece included input from the audience, whether in the form of crazy sounds being turned into a song, someone’s name improvised into a rhythmic number, or an improvisational battle between Adam on saxophone and a young audience member on theremin. Adam talked through how he was using his loop pedals and gave information on the different instruments he was using as he went, keeping the program educational while keeping up the pace of the show, and wasn’t fazed when a minor malfunction of his equipment placed his opening number in an unusual time signature.

But it wasn’t just for the kids. Adults were also encouraged to participate, with one of the many highlights of the show involving one of the parents rapping (accompanied by Adam’s phat beats) to the text of that most dreaded bedtime storybook: Fox in Socks.

Adam’s exceptional musicianship shines through the entire performance, not only in the way he is able to make fart noises sound musical, but in the way he builds songs from nothing, including structure, rhythmic complexity, and harmonic structure. Musicians and non-musicians alike will appreciate the genius Adam brings to every piece.

Unfortunately, both of Adam’s Fringe shows have ended, but be sure to catch this Adelaide local’s other performances throughout the year – each one is guaranteed to be unique and mesmerising.
