Stewart D’Arrietta was a Fringe favourite last year and in 2019, and 2017 and from the response when he walked out on to the stage with "his hat on" I knew this was going to be another successful show for him.
"My Joe Cocker" is D'Arrietta's brand new show in which he performs with a four piece band including a piano accordianist. I was expecting to hear some of Joe Cocker's biggest hits and I was not disappointed. D'Arietta started off with "A Little Help From My Friends, followed up with "Feelin' Alright through to "You Can Leave You Hat On" and a wonderful version of the Leonard Cohen song "First We Take Manhatten (1988) featuring a wonderful piano accordian solo. There was plenty of humourous dialogue throughout the evening including a very interesting story about Cocker's visit to Australia!
D’Arrietta also managed to squeeze in a fun swipe at Adelaide being known as "the City of Churches" which has us all in fits of laughter and he followed this up with a humorous “sermon” which led to everyone joining in a beautiful version of Hallelujah! Felt like I was in church ! All I needed were my rosary beads!😁
When I closed my eyes listening to D'Arriett's signature gravelliness, the emotion he put into every song and his brilliant piano playing - it could well have been Joe Crocker on the stage. Fabulous!
The show ended with a fabulous two-song encore and a well deserved long-standing ovation.
If you are a fan of Stewart D’Arrietta and Joe Cocker, you should try to catch one of the other “My Joe Cocker” shows on offer at other Fringe venues.
