Itā€™s shocking to learn that Brown Women Comedy is the only comedy group of its kind in Australia. Featuring an exclusive line-up of incredibly talented Indian, Pakistani, Lebanese and South Asian women comedians, we are reminded of Audre Lordeā€™s critique: ā€˜As white women ignore their built-in privilege of whiteness and define woman in terms of their own experience alone, then women of colour become ā€œother,ā€ the outsider whose experience and tradition is too ā€œalienā€ to comprehend.ā€™ And thatā€™s what makes this show exceptional: not just that itā€™s long overdue, not just the performersā€™ comedic skills, but also their authentic and fearless approach to turning this ā€˜otherā€™ on its head. Nothing is off-limits; they use empowered storytelling to give us a peek into their lives, exploring the challenges of sexual identity, cultural heritage, familial expectations and contemporary womanhood. As well as comedy gold, Brown Women Comedy is a celebration of diversity and representation. After all, weā€™re not funny until we all have the opportunity and platform to be funny.
