It’s shocking to learn that Brown Women Comedy is the only comedy group of its kind in Australia. Featuring an exclusive line-up of incredibly talented Indian, Pakistani, Lebanese and South Asian women comedians, we are reminded of Audre Lorde’s critique: ‘As white women ignore their built-in privilege of whiteness and define woman in terms of their own experience alone, then women of colour become “other,” the outsider whose experience and tradition is too “alien” to comprehend.’
And that’s what makes this show exceptional: not just that it’s long overdue, not just the performers’ comedic skills, but also their authentic and fearless approach to turning this ‘other’ on its head. Nothing is off-limits; they use empowered storytelling to give us a peek into their lives, exploring the challenges of sexual identity, cultural heritage, familial expectations and contemporary womanhood. As well as comedy gold, Brown Women Comedy is a celebration of diversity and representation. After all, we’re not funny until we all have the opportunity and platform to be funny.
