Adelaide Fringe Review: The Best of Ladies Night

Words by Your Local Hok

Listen up folks, The Best of Ladies Night is about awesome Fringe acts starring all-female line-ups.

Hosted by a kick-ass MC, Hannah Cryle of Happy Haps Productions, the show features a wide variety of acts from female artists, comprising of dance, cabaret, stand-up comedy, circus, physical theatre, and burlesque to name a few.

This year’s venue for the show, The Lark in Gluttony is dedicated solely to independent female artists who have experienced a tough time not being able to perform during the pandemic. We’ve seen a few shows in this venue this Fringe season and have thoroughly enjoyed all of them.

Hannah does well in the opening few moments of the show, giving the audience a preview of her acrobatic skills and quirky attitude. She keeps the audience fairly engaged between each of the featured acts, introducing them in a timely fashion between transitions and getting us to dance enthusiastically during the mid-point of the show.

There’s enough of a snippet of each performance for you to feel satisfied with it, and you’ll leave perhaps wanting to see their full show afterwards.

We watched a combination of entertaining dance, cabaret, stand-up comedy, and circus on the night which we attended. We saw Arwen Diamond from the ‘Diamond Duo', Millicent Saare and Joshie Belle from ‘Awkward Activists’, Anna Piper Scott from ‘Queer and Present Danger’, and Shona Conacher from ‘Don’t Mess With The Dummies’.

Generally, variety shows can be a hit or miss depending on which performers are featured during the show you attend, but with The Best of Ladies Night, the selection of the acts featured in most of the shows are pretty good since there are a vast selection of acts to choose from. Additionally, the show is PG friendly, meaning you can take younger children to it as well.

Although the featured acts aren’t known prior to the show, you can follow the show on Instagram to get an idea of what you’re in for @HappyHapsProductions.

If you’re passionate about independent female artists and want a bang-for-your-buck type of show where you’ll experience a wide range of performing arts in one hour, The Best of Ladies Night might just be your kind of show.
