Anyone who has attended a show produced by The Hairy Godmothers knows they know how to create a great show. VILLAINS: A Dizney in Drag Parody at this year’s Fringe doesn’t disappoint.
This show is cheeky, naughty and a whole lot of fun. Opening with a cleverly re-worded version of Belle from Beauty and The Beast, the tone of the show is set. We meet a wannabe villain who calls upon their Hairy Godmother to help them work out what it is they are missing to become the most villainous villain there is. From here, the Hairy Godmother introduces them to a vast array of villains to help them on their quest.
What made this show even more magical was the fact each act sang live — no miming to tracks. Each act brings a wonderfully dark and adult spin to several well known villains. This is certainly not a show for the kids.
VILLAINS: A Dizney in Drag Parody is high energy. The hour is over before it begins. The script is witty and full of innuendos that have you crying with laughter. The cast is quick minded as well — their ad libbing always stays in character. We met Maleficent, three princes (definitely not the heroes in this story!), Ursula, Captain Hook and Cruella de Vil. Each cast member brings a much darker version of these villains. What makes this show work brilliantly is the songs the villains perform are actually parodies of other villain’s songs. A very clever concept and very well executed.
The Hairy Godmothers know how to write a good show. VILLAINS: A Dizney in Drag Parody is the perfect fairy-tale ending to a night out at the Fringe.
