Urvi Majumdar is a rising star of comedy in Melbourne and brings her latest show to the Fringe for a South Australia premiere, taking over the Alley Cat down the stairs of Rhino Room for one weekend only. The show Burnt feeds into all that the word can imply: brutal endings, fresh beginnings, burning out, personally crossed by someone close. It opens with the key framing of her family and background. Surrounded by over-achievers, the sister in Yale, cousin in NASA, being a comedian marks a distinct career choice, especially beginning it while already in a successful full-time career. The black sheep or outsider can be a common set up for comedy but Majumdar personalises it with playful descriptions and infectious optimism that contrast sharply with the darker moments of the set. When other private moments such as a long-term relationship ending and illness of a close relative, the fuse for the comedy set truly sparks. Majumdar is a comfortable storyteller and leans into self-deprecating humour with acknowledgements of main character syndrome and a friendly approach to the performance. Within the narrative of the set, faults and signs are highlighted and sought, which strongly develop personal characteristics. These underscore the climax that arises while attempting to buy a house as a relationship is breaking down. The show was well-adapted to the small venue and intimate setting with Majumdar performing in a manner that invited us into her experience and unique approach to humour. The stories were conveyed as if she was holding court at a dinner party with close friends and catching them up on the essential highlights while keeping the mood high and jovial. There were a couple moments when it felt like a quick punchline was missed. However, the set leans into the longer comedy form allowing for a peppering of smaller jokes that build tension and story rather than relying on a tension or comedy break. Urvi Majumdar’s Burnt is directed by Gillian Cosgriff and is running this weekend for Adelaide Fringe.
