Held in the airy atrium that makes up Mamacita restaurant in the Tryp by Wyndham hotel, Black Puddin is a drag and dine show; that means the performers do drag while the audience do dinner and drinks. The set-up lends a pleasingly old-fashioned dinner cabaret feel to the evening; queens weave their way around the tables, the (lovely) wait staff pop in and out and everything is up close and personal. It’s comfortably familiar, which makes the show the perfect entry point for that rarest of species in 2024: the drag virgin.

Props to Kween Kong, creator and curator. She’s brought together a rotating cast of some of the best queens around who will be popping in and out as the Fringe progresses: expect anyone from Clara Cupcakes to Estelle. Hosting duties are split between Kong, the gorgeous Hanna Conda, and Fringe Ambassador Prinnie Stevens, with audience participation and polished short, sharp routines. There are plenty of musical interludes too; you may be lucky enough to catch the incomparable Tash York’s improvised songs, or even find out where Conda keeps her recorder.

Kong developed this show in response to an unpleasantly unnecessary comment made in a Fringe review a while back. They do say that revenge is a dish best served cold. Instead this show show serves warmth: talent, food, drink and joy, all wrapped up in a bow.
